Don Rader had a rare chance in 1990 to lead his own session, and although the repertoire boasts two
Ornette Coleman tunes and four of the cornetist's originals, the style is clearly bop. Teamed with the talented altoist
Lanny Morgan, guitarist
Ron Eschete (who functions here almost like an electric keyboard), bassist Dave Enos and drummer
John Perett, the result is high-quality straight-ahead jazz. The quintet unfortunately treats the
Ornette tunes as simple medium-tempo blues, ignoring the potential freedom, but the music overall is enjoyable. Highlights include the title cut (which gives
Morgan a chance to express his individuality on soprano) and
Rader's lyrical ballad feature on "Misty." Worth searching for.
