A Typical Scorpio by Monty - DeepRiffs

If this is pop, it's pop for the jet set that spends their weekends at Monte Carlo, not for the 97-percent or so of the population that toils away so that the fortunate few can indulge themselves in such pastimes. Monty is a suave, debonair singer and lyricist; the tunes are catchy in a superficial fashion that induces guilt among salt-of-the-earth types. There seems to be some irony here, but this is too glib and facile to avoid pretension, and there are too many slick pop flourishes and dumb dance beats. The more sparsely arranged bits -- particularly the Italian gondolier-style"Will I Ever Learn?" -- indicate that Monty could be an interesting straight popster if he so desired, but that doesn't seem to be what he wants to do.
