A budget repackaging of some current and past
Dionne Warwick hits, this collection sort of underlines the fact that her releases were not very well coordinated. Generally, whenever
Dionne had a hit (which, of course, was often), Scepter usually made that the lead track of an album and threw together the remainder from several other past (and released) hits. This tended to diffuse any illustration of her evolution as an artist. It was, however, an era when singles were king, so it has to be looked at as a release of the time. In addition to the gorgeous "Alfie," this record contains some of
Dionne's finest performances ever, with the sterling "Always Something There to Remind Me," "Don't Make Me Over" and "Message to Michael." One surprise is her version of "Wives and Lovers," which had been covered by Jack Jones as well as
Frank Sinatra. Overall, though, this is a too-short nine-song collection, and the mastering and sound leave a bit to be desired.
