The humor of guitarist Chris Frye dominates
the Bill Hilly Band's sensibility. Nonetheless, brilliant multi-instrumentalist Marc Atkinson leaves his mark all over
All Day Every Day, which was nominated for a best roots album Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy). Atkinson contributes classical influences to "Shostakoverture" and "Explorations of a Kolomeika," separating
the Bills from the bulk of the O Brother Where Art Thou crowd on this style-busting release. The West Coast quartet still dependably and lovingly deliver heartfelt folk music, including an especially melancholy version of the traditional "Moonshiner." Like fellow Canadians
Kate & Anna McGarrigle,
the Bills occasionally toss in some French lyrics. ~ Mark Allan
