This album is indeed a crazy mix of rhythms, apparently drawn from a variety of influences and backgrounds. Not only did the band borrow equipment from
Phish for their debut disc, they also appear to borrow sounds and styles from a number of other groups. The first track, "Wedge," sounds much a like a rockabilly
Spanic Boys or
TMBG tune. The instrumental "G-thing" and "Afro Soup" call to mind the foreign beats used and made famous by the likes of
Paul Simon and
Peter Gabriel. Along with the countrified "PG-13," "Half My Life" calls
Elton John to mind, not only because of the vocal similarities, but also with its meaningful mix of verse and chorus and slightly warbled lyric. Most of the sounds borrowed, however, are done quite well. ~ Matthew Robinson
