On his debut album, 17-year-old Californian Ivan Cornejo shakes up his formula. When he started posting videos to TikTok at 15, Cornejo recorded primarily requinto covers before he was encouraged by Manzana Records to transition to writing his own songs. The eight tunes presented on Alma Vacía are penned by Cornejo. They are delivered in his idiosyncratic, world-weary style using minor chords, circular phrases, and gorgeous guitar and bass work -- there are no drums. "Llamadas Perdidas" and "Corazón Frio," two of his early singles, are here alongside moody, jazz-inflected originals such as "Esa Carita" and sultry midtempo romantic ballads such as "Estas en Mi Pasado."
