Chicago-born organist
Rev. Maceo Woods provides his interpretations of many gospel standards on this album of solo instrumentals.
Woods' organ-playing style is familiar from church services, a slow-moving, intense approach with many long-held chords. His feel is distinctive, however, and he puts his stamp on the well-known tunes, some of which are not so recognizable in his hands. This is an album for church music and organ fans; others may find it a bit wearing after a while.
