ALBUM

Although Southern California musician J.D. King’s 2008 album Here’s J.D. King resonates with a sun-flared, early-'70s Bakersfield country sound, his preceding 2007 debut, American Mercury, mines the avant-garde textures of Andy Warhol’s Factory scene on the East Coast. King opens with the experimental “Agony,” a static distortion-driven piece that pays homage not to Warhol but to abstract impressionist Arshile Gorky (though the backmasking and tom-driven drums do sound highly influenced by The Velvet Underground). The following “Bees Caught in the Wrong Hive” is a slow-burning instrumental that ushers in Ennio Morricone–toned baritone guitar leads, giving the brooding drones a hint of spaghetti western flare. The abstract electric guitar tantrums in “Blues for Elizabeth Bentley” play like Jon Spencer musing about an American spy for the Soviet Union. “In Memory of John Morrison Birch” takes a less aggressive and more droning approach to instrumentally serenading the famed Cold War martyr. The abrasive and disjointed “Suicide of the West” dedicates itself to political theorist and philosopher James Burnham.
