Marketed with an affordable price point,
Amiga Mía is a double-disc compilation of questionably compiled hit material by female Latin pop singers affiliated with EMI. For sure, there's a lot of music here (a whopping 44 tracks in all) and much of it is good if not great, but the material is badly dated, and many of the singers are obscure nowadays. Take for instance a few of the biggest stars found on Amiga Mia:
Paulina Rubio,
Thalía, and
Edith Márquez. The
Rubio inclusion, "Mío," the lead single from her debut album
La Chica Dorada (1992), dates back nearly two decades and isn't among her better hits. The
Thalía inclusion, "No Me Enseñaste," is fortunately one of her better hits, but it's also old, dating back to her eponymous album
Thalía (2002).
Márquez's "Entre Ella y Yo" is similarly old, dating back to her third album,
Extraviate (2001). While there are other well-known Latin pop stars on
Amiga Mía, they're from decades past (Yuri,
Manoella Torres,
Vikki Carr). Others are just plain obscure (
Prisma,
Estela Nuñez,
Mocedades). Moreover, several of the singers are featured repeatedly. For instance, Yuri shows up three times, as do Kiki and
Daniela Romo. If you're a fan of female Latin pop singers from yesteryear,
Amiga Mía might be worthwhile. There are a lot of bona fide hits on here, no doubt, and the price point is attractive. On the other hand, the material is badly dated, the selections are seemingly random, and even the packaging is poorly put together.
