This CD presents arrangements by modern Chinese composers of folk songs from different regions and different peoples of China. China has more than 100 different peoples, the largest group of course being the Han people (i.e., the Chinese). Listeners hear such well-known Chinese instruments as the erhu (a two-stringed fiddle), the pipa (a pear-shaped lute), the zheng (a table zither), the yangqin (a dulcimer), and other instruments, as well as a few Western instruments, in particular the cello. This excellent CD by
the Beijing Instrumental Ensemble gives a pertinent overview of China's colorful music and instruments. ~ Bruno Deschênes
