Keri Leigh is a superior vocalist who is heard at her best during her Waldoxy release singing conventional electric blues where her expressive skills (and her ability to come up with interesting lyrics) can really be heard. She wrote the words to six of the dozen selections but her two strongest performances are actually on the witty and boisterous "Use What You Got" and
Koko Taylor's "Voodoo Woman" where she struts her stuff. Also worth hearing are a couple of acoustic country blues numbers although
Leigh's occasional departures into
Aretha Franklin-influenced r&b are throwaways. But with Mark Lyon's versatile guitar solos and fine four-piece horn section offering her strong support,
Keri Leigh's release is a well-paced set and an easily recommended release. ~ Scott Yanow
