AS is the first proper release by cryptic Berlin-based electronic duo Amnesia Scanner, following several tracks and mixes posted online as well as collaborations with Holly Herndon, Mykki Blanco, and Bill Kouligas. While their previous online releases tended to be lengthy and sprawling, this EP distills their dense, explosive sound into three-minute bites. The duo mutate club music conventions through queasy synths and violently crashing sound effects, chopping dancehall and hip-hop vocals through cheese graters on tracks like "AS Chingy" and "AS Crust." "AS Want It" features Panda Bear-sounding vocal samples over beats which sound like cracking tree branches. Elsewhere, they interrupt suspenseful moments of near-silence with sudden bursts of bludgeoning soundwaves, and pointillist trance arpeggios keep things on edge. One of the most daring, exciting electronic releases of 2016.
