Close your eyes and spin this disk, and you will be forgiven for thinking that you are listening to some late
Chet Baker.
Chiara is a trumpeter who has absorbed
Baker's sound and phrasing. The Italian blows quietly and lyrically, without any unnecessary notes. While guitarist
Luigi Tessarollo is a stylistically different player than
Baker's late partner,
Philip Catherine,
Tessarollo's electric guitar suits the mood with remarkable style. There are some points when the simplicity of the music is a drawback, but, in all, these are the sort of laid-back, lovely song-infused sonorities that go well with a bottle of wine on a cool summer night. The remainder of the rhythm section, bassist Nicola Muresu and drummer Alessandro Minetto, is careful to keep it slow and soft, and they never intrude. Graceful, and at times rising to true art, this recording has the traces of something special. This is only the beginning for the young trumpeter, whose gorgeous tone pulls at the heartstrings.
