COMPILATION

Toad’s eponymous 1972 album was the Swiss hard-rock trio’s official debut, but it was this album from two years prior that was originally meant to introduce the world to their face-melting jams. B.U.F.O. (Blues United Fighting Organization) was recorded in 1970 at EMI Studios in Basel, Switzerland. Following completion, EMI rejected these recordings and sent Toad back in the studio. Fast-forward to a resurgence of interest in European hard rock at the dawn of the 21st century, when RD Records’ Raymond Dumont found the acetates to B.U.F.O. and Toad’s long-lost debut was finally released in 2003. “Pig’s Walk” opens like stumbling into the middle of a guitar-solo maelstrom — it’s basically four and a half minutes of unhinged leads doing battle with Hendrix-esque blues riffs. “Animal’s World” mellows out with an acoustic guitar intro before Sabbathy sludge pumps under Vic Vergeat singing like Outsideinside-era Blue Cheer. Impressive wah-wah pedal control is exercised on “Dream Girl” before a bluesy cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright” provides tube-amp tones and subtly trippy leads.
