Every facet of Don Covay's arsenal is covered on this 16-cut tribute album loaded with rock celebrity types, but proves to be much more than an empty, posturing session. Surprises include
Barrence Whitfield's rousing "Pony Time," awith a fine guitar solo from Milton Reder,
Billy Squier's animated "See Saw,"
Nona Hendryx's wistful "We Can't Make It No More" and
Bobby Womack's marvelous "Checkin' Out." Even less than stalwart efforts, like
Ron Wood's "Chain of Fools" and
Robert Cray's "He Don't Know," are listenable, and when the duo of Arlene Smith and Johnny Colla make "Letter Full of Tears" poignant, it is the ultimate testimony to Don Covay's greatness. ~ Ron Wynn
