Hate Your Guts are a hardcore band; this album offers ten tracks in 20 minutes, with titles that include "Short Eyes" (a prison term for a child molester) and "All Veins." Suffice it to say these guys don't have the most positive impressions of their fellow humans, and that's reflected in the primitive, metallic riffing and rudimentary, hammering drums. Some songs don't even need to reach the two-minute mark; "Stockholm, USA" clocks in at 2:13, but the last :20 or so is feedback. Any fan of the chugging, one-chord breakdown style of hardcore that's been popular among tattooed knuckle-draggers in baggy jeans and XXL hoodies for over two decades should know pretty much what to expect from this band, this album, this genre. There are no sonic surprises here, but "All Veins" verges on catchy, even with the lead vocalist at full raw-throated bellowing strength, and the gang shouts on "First Born" are suitably imposing. These guys know what hardcore fans want, and they deliver, sustaining an impressive level of intensity for the album's entire brief running time. ~ Phil Freeman
