After the success of his first album, Dear Annie (2018), we wondered how Rejjie Snow would follow it up in order to keep his crown as the leading representative of Irish rap on the world stage. And now we have the answer: by teaming up with two producers, Dee Lilly and Cam O'bi, he has managed to create a real fusion sound that mingles rap with jazz and funky synths. The result is called Baw Baw Black Sheep. With the central theme of family, and interludes with childish voices (his own, modified), Rejjie Snow has almost created a concept album here. But rather than getting lost in an overwrought tracklist, he is having some fun with disco-funk sounds on the superb Disco Pantz, soul on Mirrors (featuring Swedish singer Snoh Aalegra), and a detached discussion of cocaine on the very free Oreos. The voice of MF DOOM sounds on the calm Cookie Chips, which was released as a single in July 2020, just three months before the English rapper's death. The title Relax is well-chosen, summarising the low-key, mischievous atmosphere of this second album. © Brice Miclet / Qobuz
