This is another excellent effort from
King, an outstanding traditional bluegrass vocalist who is heavily influenced by country singers like George Jones,
Buck Owens and
Stonewall Jackson.
King is not a songwriter, but he usually manages to dig up a batch of strong but obscure songs. This time is no exception, as he revives Jackson's "Big House on the Corner," and Leon Payne's "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me," and songs written or made famous by
Ernest Tubb, Johnnie and Jack,
Moon Mullican,
Bill Monroe, and the
Country Gentlemen.
Bed by the Window is the first of King's CDs to feature his road band. Kevin Prater (mandolin),
Adam Poindexter (banjo) and
Jason Moore (bass) play on all of the tracks. Most of the fiddle work was done by sessioneer
Bobby Hicks, but fiddler Owen Saunders joined the band in time to play on two tracks, and subsequently joined the band on the road. ~ Ben O'Connor
