This unique solo album features Italian
Filippo Portera on alto and baritone saxophones, plus flute, short-wave radio, reciting voices, telephone, mini-vibes, piano and electronics, all overdubbed to create the impression of group interplay. Surprisingly, and even a touch disappointingly, the lengthy saxophone harmonies are more conservative than might be expected, although there are several instances of adventurous voicing. The colors and variety entice, and there is a wealth of creativity represented here, including some very lovely melodies. Occasionally,
Portera takes it outside, heightening the interest and appeal. The saxophonist boasts a attractive, clear tone, and a good jazz feel, with ample opportunity to stretch, particularly on the slower cuts. Ultimately, though, it is the manipulations of sound and curious sonorities that separate this one from the pack. ~ Steve Loewy
