Bootlegging the Bootleggers by Johnny Thunders - DeepRiffs

COMPILATION

The late New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders made the live BOOTLEGGING THE BOOTLEGGERS to head actual bootleggers off at the pass. With goofy-voiced introductions from Thunders himself, the songs are a shambling mess of tossed-off acoustic poetry, druggy R&B, and gutter rock & roll. In addition to a few covers, like the Stones’s “As Tears Go By” and the surf classic “Wipeout,” are the New York Dolls standard “Personality Crisis” as well as Thunders originals. The sound quality varies wildly from song to song (even with the remastering), but part of the charm is the raw grit in Thunders’s ragged performances.
