Tuatara's Breaking the Ethers is an ambitious but heavily flawed foray into vaguely experimental, Eastern-tinged jazz-rock which is weighed down by its own pretensions. While the shifting textures and stylistic fusions of the music are intriguing, the record itself lacks interesting compositions, and the musicians, though well-intentioned, aren't quite capable of drawing blood from a stone. Like most side projects,
Tuatara is only of interest to hardcore fans of the groups involved, because the music isn't compelling as anything other than a curiosity. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
