Brilliant by The Flashcubes - DeepRiffs

Seventies power pop group the Flashcubes reunited in 2002 and played some shows in Japan (as documented on the 2002 CD Live in Japan: Raw Power Pop). The shows went so well that the group decided to record a new studio album. For the most part, the band utilizes the best aspects of the power pop sound: jangling guitars, driving beats, and plaintive vocals. The only problem is that the songs they apply this classic sound to are no great shakes -- they lack hooks and are quite often embarrassing in the lyric department, "Pathetic" and "Five Personalities" being the main offenders. The vocals are also wildly uneven; depending on who in the group sings, some of the vocals sound battered and just plain old. Some of the songs are nice enough ("When We Close Our Eyes" has a catchy chorus, "I'm a Mystery" is a bouncy number that sounds like a solid Los Lobos track), but the only song that registers is the cover of Eddie & the Hot Rods' classic "Do Anything You Wanna Do." When the cover is the best song on the album, you might be in trouble. Probably the Flashcubes should have called it quits after their triumphant reunion shows, since this generic record adds nothing to their legacy.
