In 1974, writer/producer
Johnny Bristol launched his career as a performer. That year's Hang On in There Baby yielded classic singles with "You and I" and also the title track. But 1975's Feeling the Magic wasn't as successful, and
Bristol left MGM for Atlantic Records.
Bristol's Creme is his Atlantic debut album. If people were let down by the lack of freshness and hooks on Feeling the Magic, changes were immediately heard on this album, which is best known for its first single, "Do It to My Mind." Sexy, playful, and potent, "Do It to My Mind" is one of
Bristol's finest singles, if not one of the best from the seductive and melodic genre from 1973-1977. "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya" is certainly close behind. Everything's not great here, however. Even rare groove fanatics might have to break camp with "I Love Talkin' Bout Baby," easily one of the most droning things in the
Bristol catalog. Not surprisingly,
Bristol got one of the best tracks from a subject matter he was adept with. Known for writing lyrics about his deflowering techniques, "Love to Have a Chance to Taste the Wine" has
Bristol back to his métier with great results. Although this didn't have a particularly successful run up the charts,
Bristol's Creme has been acknowledged as highly sought-after effort and the work here is solid throughout. ~ Jason Elias
