Cornetist
Ruby Braff and pianist
Ellis Larkins have recorded quite a few lyrical duet albums since the 1950s. Their two Arbors CDs of
Irving Berlin tunes, both dedicated to
Ella Fitzgerald, find the pair still in top form. While the very subtle
Larkins takes some melodic solos and serves as a sparse orchestra behind
Braff, the cornetist displays his typically wide range of emotions, making every highly expressive note count. The repertoire mixes together familiar tunes (such as "Cheek to Cheek," "Always" and "The Song Is Ended") with some real
Berlin obscurities ("Remember the Night," "Better Luck Next Time" and "How About Me"). Charming music. ~ Scott Yanow
