Canto Em Qualquer Canto is a 2004 live recording from the Teatro Sesc Pinheiros in São Paulo.
Ney Matogrosso is accompanied solely by a very talented guitar quartet formed by Marcelo Gonçalves,
Pedro Jóia,
Ricardo Silveira and
Zé Paulo Becker. The result is a very tasteful, intimate and inspired album showing
Matogrosso at the peak of his artistic creativity. It is also yet more proof that
Matogrosso, after a career spanning four decades, is still very much evolving as an artist and seemingly gaining elegance and depth for each year that passes. The selection of songs performed here is rather surprising, ranging from reinterpretations of more or less forgotten gems of his own past recordings, to versions of excellent tracks by other artists such as "Dos Cruces" and "Já Te Falei." The title track is an exquisite composition by
Itamar Assumpção and one of the absolute highlights of the album, along with the magnificent classic "Tanto Amar." The passion filled "Retrato Marrom" and "Lábios de Mel" suits
Matogrosso's theatrical and romantic performing style perfectly, while "Dos Cruces," as well as "O Doce e o Amargo" (of course drawn from
Matogrosso's time as the frontman of
Secos & Molhados) gains exciting flamenco arrangements.
Canto Em Qualquer Canto is definitely one of
Matogrosso's most sophisticated, colorful and impressive releases to date. ~ Philip Jandovský
