On
Carolina,
Carlos Burity shows what semba is all about. It's one of the predominant dance rhythms of Angola, and on
Carolina it's in the hands of one of its masters. From the opening percussive downbeat, the band makes it clear that it's going to make you dance. A variety of percussion is all over the album, weaving in, out, under, around, and through the screaming horns, crisp guitars, and keyboards, creating an irresistible wave that's aimed at the hips and feet. One semi-slow ballad allows for catching one's breath.
Carlos Burity is one of the great underappreciated artists of African music. His music possesses lots of drive, matched only by the melodic beauty of his songs. Highly recommended.
