In another era, before the advent of pop-oriented worship music, a couple of acoustic-guitar-playing singer/songwriter types like Shanes Barnard and Everett probably would have wound up occupying the AM pop airwaves with secular fare a la Loggins & Messina or maybe Seals & Crofts. The wave of worship music that first glimmered in the '80s and moved full-blown through the '90s onward has allowed them to ply their trade of gentle voices, poignantly picked guitars, and winsome melodies in service of a deeply felt spiritual message. Unlike some other Christian pop artists, Barnard and Everett don't do anything to disguise their lyrical intentions; every song on CARRY AWAY deals with faith in an earnest and upfront way. And while an easygoing folk-pop sound dominates, the boys still manage to rock it up a bit on songs like the propulsive title track.
