Are you one of those people who can look at a blank canvas in an art gallery and debate for hours what the artist was trying to say? Can you read a book with a variety of artsy-fartsy layouts and virtually illegible fonts and appreciate it solely on the merits of its artistic presentation? If so, this ultra-experimental CD may be perfectly suited for you, but for the rest of us it's merely an oblique bit of auditory cut-and-paste masturbation. (Case of the Missing) Thumb is obviously meant to be a conceptual piece of sorts, with sound artist Marcelo Radulovich mixing samples from various field recordings with treated tapes of analog synth pieces to create a 43-minute stream of innocuous background noise that comes across like so much meaningless aural wallpaper. Virtually devoid of melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, or any of the other characteristics that typically define a collection of sounds as music, you'd get the same effect just by sitting at a busy intersection in any given metropolitan city. But is it art? Well, maybe...but that doesn't mean everyone should spend their 12 hard-earned bucks on it.
