Charles Blenzig is an excellent pianist who is influenced by
McCoy Tyner but has his own voice. On this trio set with bassist Kenny Davis and drummer
Gene Jackson,
Blenzig comes up with unpredictable but logical solos on eight jazz standards and
the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home."
Blenzig, who takes "When I Fall in Love" and the closing "You Don't Know What Love Is" as unaccompanied solos, digs into such numbers as "Invitation," "It Never Entered My Mind," and a cooking "It's You or No One" with fresh ideas and plenty of spirit. He deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow
