Change ringing, the ringing of church bells by groups of ringers in mathematical sequences called "methods," is a specifically, not to say peculiarly, British art. Like auction calls, change ringing is a phenomenon on the edge of what is generally understood by the word music. The booklet for this disc introduces the practice, and for the Monty Python fan it's worth the purchase price all by itself. It's the names of the methods -- Erin Caters, Double Norwich Court Bob Major ("a progressive method between Plain and surprise Principles," read the notes), and Little Bob Maximus (a cousin to Plain Bob) -- that delight. "Tittums" is another technical term involved. If a method is played all the way through, which can take hours, that's called a "peal," but here the listener gets only a taste -- excerpts are between five and 11 minutes long. The total time is just 41 and a half minutes, which seems ungenerous, but this is a reissue of a 1973 LP. Nothing on the package except the clothing of the ringers (think miniskirts) indicates the date, but this recording is apparently considered a classic in the small but understandably closely knit change ringing community. Whether it's a classic or not, any listener who enjoys the music of the minimalists ought to line up for this disc -- with bells on.
