This isn't your "usual" kirtan chanting, if you consider
Krishna Das and his posse to be usual. It's not all gussied up with Western instruments and such. And that's what is really nice about this disc -- its simplicity and the beauty that is revealed through it. Using only harmonium and tabla, with a little violin here and there to support her voice,
Wah! pours out her devotion, first to her own guru, then to Lords Krishna and Rama. She covers a lot of familiar ground with the traditional "Govinda Jaya Jaya," "Shree Ram Jay Ram," "Sita Ram," and "Krishna Govinda." Her pronunciation is a little off, particularly on "Govinda Jaya Jaya." But that's not a big deal. Heck, a lot of Indian text chants even include a verse asking for forgiveness for missed pronunciations. It seems the ancient sages knew it would be tricky for someone down the line; they figured if the intention was pure, so would be the offering. And that's exactly the case here. ~ Kelly McCartney
