The music on this pianoless quartet date is full of color, life, and wit, ranging from hints of trad to brief free moments, from
Leadbelly and
Albert Ayler to a pair of obscure
Duke Ellington songs. While tenor saxophonist
Daniele D'Agaro (doubling on clarinet) has plenty of inventive spots, and bassist Ken Kessler and drummer Robert Barry keep the momentum flowing, trombonist Jeb Bishop is often the solo star in addition to frequently being the dominant voice in the ensemble. The performances are concise, surprisingly melodic and full of purpose. A great deal of music takes place in a relatively brief period of time and all of it is worth hearing. The eclectic nature of much of the modern jazz scene is heard throughout this memorable effort. ~ Scott Yanow
