CLASSIC MASTERS provides a concise introduction to the enigmatic singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon. A musical journeywoman, DeShannon was considerably more successful as a behind-the-scenes songsmith than she was as a pop star. Nonetheless, as the 12 tracks here prove, DeShannon was a talented, versatile singer with a unique, husky blue-eyed-soul voice. Among the stand-out tracks are her excellent rendition of the Searchers' "Needles And Pins," the Spector-esque "When You Walk in the Room," a sultry pop take on the Band's "The Weight," and what is perhaps her best-known song, the uplifting 1969 hit "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." There's quite a bit more to this overlooked industry veteran than these dozen songs but, still, CLASSIC MASTERS makes for a useful entry point.
