Collection's focus isn't typical of
José Feliciano compilations, of which there are many. Sure there are familiar hits here, like the melodramatic take of an already melodramatic "Light My Fire" and soulful takes on "California Dreamin'," "And I Love Her," and "Sunny," but beyond those caveats, the tracks are dominated by
Feliciano's Spanish language hits. It's a refreshing approach, with the master Latin soul song interpreter taking on songs like
Jorge Ben's ("Nena Na Na") and classic boleros like "Usted." The mix of English and Spanish hits on Collection gives listeners a better-defined picture of
Feliciano's unique take on the Latin soul experience and serves as a good, but not definitive, introduction to both. ~ Wade Kergan
