This three-disc compendium of
Ray Charles' earliest sides is a portrait (and not a very good sounding one at that) of
Charles as a blues singer and a
Nat King Cole-like ballad singer (disc three in particular has the latter), before the gospel went into his performances.
Charles was a fine performer early on, but this is not the same
Ray Charles most listeners are aware of, and should be duly noted. Still, if you already have his greatest sides, a little digging here might be useful, and for the price,
Confession Blues is somewhat satisfactory.
