There are reggae rhythms on this set of pop covers, but they’re very urbane and muted, smoothed out into something resembling orchestrated MOR. That’s not a bad thing here, particularly on tracks like
Calvin Richardson’s “There Goes My Baby,”
Jamelody’s cover of
Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky,” and
Bobby Kray’s self-aggrandizing version of Cee-Lo’s “Crazy,” but listeners should just be aware that this gently grooving playlist for Valentine’s Day probably isn’t going down in the Kingston dancehalls. Light a couple candles, though, and you’ve got yourself a bright and mellow soundtrack for a romantic night at home. ~ Steve Leggett
