Five years after debuting modestly with Steppin' in Shit, the Sucka MCs returned in 2002 with Da Album, a more satisfying collection of the Iowan hip-hop collective's goofy rhyming. There are ten songs on Da Album and one skit, all of which feature numerous group members, each being quite charismatic, taking strange names like Coolzey, Dr. Don, the Warden, the Worm, the Sunshine Kid, DJ Damn Them Balls Are Salty, and Egg Nog. Though this sounds quite unlike traditional hip-hop because of the geeky white-boy humor, the Sucka MCs are really straightforward b-boys at heart, particularly when it comes to beat-making. If you strip away the humor, the songs on Da Album are rather straightforward hip-hop, albeit underground hip-hop with a noticeably lo-fi aesthetic. And in terms of rhyming, the Sucka MCs are quite dexterous, not what you'd expect from a bunch of white boys from Iowa. However, it's the constant onslaught of humor and antics that make the Sucka MCs seem so uncanny. Sure, Biz Markie and the Beastie Boys were goofy at times, but none were this relentlessly comic -- and not comic in a funny, ha-ha-ha way but rather in a downright silly, wierdo way. If you like this sort of "smart" humor and you like underground hip-hop, there's a good chance you'll like this album.
