It may seem like sacrilege to describe a gospel album as sexy, but David Houston's performances of sacred standards on David are intensely sensual and soulful. Produced by the forward-looking Billy Sherrill and backed by the Jordanaires, David is a rarity among the sacred albums cranked out in profusion by major country artists in that it takes well-known spirituals and transforms them into something surprisingly new and compelling. He prolongs "Were You There" into five aching minutes of religious ecstasy, and revives "The Milky White Way"--one of Elvis Presley's best gospel numbers--without echoing The King. One glance at the track list and its roster of chestnuts like "Old Time Religion," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and "When the Saints Go Marching In" may convince potential listeners that there is nothing new to be heard here, but the remarkable David should not be judged by its cover.
