Universal Pictures' 3-D animated comedy Despicable Me follows the misadventures of a super-villain named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) as he tries to raise three adopted girls in the midst of pulling off his greatest scheme, stealing the moon. Produced by award-winning pop/R&B/hip-hop guru
Pharrell Williams, the film's soundtrack features a winning mix of old-school funk, contemporary hip-hop, and vintage disco (
the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing" and
the Sylvers' "Boogie Fever").
Pharrell sings lead on four of the songs, including the comically sinister title cut (which suffers from an unnecessary application of abysmal, bandwagon Auto-Tune), "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Prettiest Girls," and "Rocket's Theme." He co-wrote and produced the remaining tracks, including
Clique Girlz Destinee & Paris' "I'm on a Roll" and "My Life" with
Robin Thicke. ~ James Christopher Monger
