French synth duo Model Alpha create familiar, yet welcome, hypnotic soundscapes on their debut LP. The duo's warm analog sound is pleasantly reminiscent of Berlin School electronics, with bright arpeggios punctuating woozy electronic drones, but the duo has a refreshing fondness for beats, venturing into techno territory with tracks like "Schematics," and hinting toward Italo-disco with "Rock Box." The darker "Symmetry" edges toward cinematic synth revivalists like Umberto and Pye Corner Audio, while the effervescent "Renaissance" bubbles in slow motion. The album's final few tracks comfortably drift off a bit, recalling the brainy yet unpretentious computer music of Laurie Spiegel as well as German techno forefather Manuel Göttsching. The entirely instrumental album feels a bit anonymous, but it's impossible to fault it for that when the results are so pleasing. Dimensions is a thoroughly enjoyable record of synth explorations that doesn't quite feel beholden to any particular style or era.
