If you enjoyed the main, you’re going to love dessert! Released just three months after Dinner Party, the supergroup made up of jazzmen Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, the multi-instrumentalist and producer Terrence Martin and rap beatmaker Patrick Douthit a.k.a. 9th Wonder are serving up a second portion. The four amazing Californians have remixed the seven tracks from their summertime release with the help of a pretty crazy lineup: Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, Rapsody, Buddy and Malaya to name a few. The mood is still soaked in contemporary soul. It’s very chilled and viscerally soft. It’s like a soundtrack steeped in 90s nu soul, where they place a greater emphasis on the general atmosphere instead of getting all technical. The only flaw? Sometimes we don’t get to enjoy the featurings for long enough, especially on Herbie Hancock’s track where a small tinkle on the piano is slipped into a 2-minute composition… All the same, this is a great EP that mixes cinematographic keyboards, sensual brass and soulful vocals that are as light as a soufflé. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
