Birmingham, Ala., might not be the first place you’d think of for a psychedelic experience—but one listen to “It’s All Melted” from The Dirty Lungs’ debut album, and you’ll understand the buzz around this long-running garage-psych band. Tours and member changes have altered the group’s sound over the seven years previous to this album, but their time spent sharing stages with The Clientele, British Sea Power, New Madrid, Growlers, and Natural Child have taught them the lessons that only an experienced band can know. Currently a quartet led by founding members Ra-Jaan Parmley and Carson Mitchell and filled out by Chris Scott and Justin Ward, The Dirty Lungs play uncompromising rock ’n’ roll that’s best illustrated on “Don’t F*****g Remind Me,” where their anger is matched by a promising mix that shoves the vocals in front of the inspired, distorted clamor. “I Suck in Bed” capitalizes on a riff raw enough for The Stooges in their prime—and a rough mix worthy enough for Rough Power (the bootleg of early Raw Power mixes). This is serious stuff.
