Profanatica is a black metal group from upstate New York that's been around since 1990, but didn't release a full-length album until 2007's
Profanatitas de Domonatia. Their music is ultra-primitive black metal, but with some notable differences between their work and that of their nominal peers. The most obvious is the overwhelming bass sound, which is much louder than the guitars and often threatens to swallow the entire mix, except for the vocals, which are placed so far forward, the album sounds like a bedroom demo. Perhaps this is the point, but if so, it's a bad choice, because
Profanatica don't have that much to say, and even less so on their 2010 album
Disgusting Blasphemies Against God. They hate Christianity and Christians? Well, that's not exactly an original stance at this point; indeed, the blasphemers' section of metal is a pretty big club to join, and growing seemingly every day. So it would be nice if bands intent on hammering away at Jesus would do something musically interesting while they're at it.
Profanatica mostly don't, the death-metal-ish "Covered in Black Shit" coming closest to being an exception. The drumming is so minimal and repetitive it might as well be a machine, and the guitars -- while occasionally feeding back in a way that feels deliberate and well-chosen -- are pretty much Black Metal 101. Only the huge, headache-inducing bass sound separates
Profanatica from the pack, and not necessarily in a good way. ~ Phil Freeman
