Violinist
Diane Delin has a "legitimate" classical tone on her instrument and improvises in an unhurried fashion. Pianist Dennis Luxion works well with her, displaying both classical technique and the willingness to push both himself and the violinist. Together they perform two standards (including a delightful opening version of "My Melancholy Baby") and nine originals, ranging from introspective ballads to the more straight-ahead "Awakening." There are times when the music is a bit dry, but those moments pass quickly and are overshadowed by the fine ballad "Patience," the interplay between the players on the non-blues "Lou's Blues," and the charming "Tangold." This is a set that should particularly interest classical listeners who wish to get gradually into jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
