Einzelkämpfer by Agf - DeepRiffs

Beginning with the slow collage of hums, sighs and more that makes up the appropriately titled "Do Nothing Until (A Quiet Sense of Truth is Established)," Einzelkämpfer finds Antye Greie stepping slightly aside from her regular AGF moniker to create another striking album of exploratory electronics that deftly straddles the line between outright experimentation and easy, immediate listening. If anything the album feels like a natural progression from the ultimately limiting expectations of what a ‘glitch' album or an ‘IDM' release or the like is supposed to be -- if there's understandable echoes throughout of the burst of 1990s experimentation given AGF's previous work, more than before one also senses the influence of earlier sound and spoken word artists such as Alvin Lucier or Laurie Anderson or many others besides. Shifting between spoken phrases and stories (as on the intensely delivered "Dis-Hero Equals," her words suddenly twisted and distorted and then returned to normal and back again over soothing tones, or the even more unsettled fairy-tale-of-sorts "Alone In the Woods (The Fox, the Skunk and the Rabbit") and more straightforward vocal performances that are still fragmented ("Worin Mein Mund Zur Bewegung Fand" being a stellar example). Meanwhile, moments like the aggressive chirps and unnerving crackle floating over equally deceptively calm arrangements on "Her Beauty Kills Me" help to further flesh out this strange, compelling album. ~ Ned Raggett
