Guitar-based bachata comes in two general auras. There's the bolero/jibaro-music wing off which
Juan-Luis Guerra so successfully fed, and then there's the upbeat version that's essentially guitar-merengue. Though he's a lot less ballistic than Fefita, Vargas is firmly in the merengue camp, and mostly sticks to having a stompin' good time. It's been so recently that this stuff was available that the guitar work is what comes over with most impact, but in a loose, down-home sort of way the whole thing swings sinfully.
