Ellyn Rucker is a strong enough pianist that she does not really need to sing, and she is a talented enough vocalist that she would be a popular attraction if she did not play a note of music. The Denver-based pianist-vocalist is equally skilled in both areas as shown on this Capri set, her debut as a leader. With the assistance of tenor saxophonist
Pete Christlieb, bassist
John Clayton and drummer
Jeff Hamilton,
Rucker's sensuous voice and
Bill Evans-influenced piano make for a perfect combination on such tunes as "In Your Own Sweet Way," "One Morning in May," "'Round Midnight" and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." A special bonus is a three-song "Solo Medley." ~ Scott Yanow
