This independent one-off release from Everyman is a mellow, mostly bland reggae or "Caribbean soul" collection that wanders into Top 40 pop, with equally uninspiring results. Everyman is made up of vocalist/bassist Leo Jones, guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist "H" Grant, lead guitarist Allen Poynton, and percussionist Max Clair. Recorded almost entirely with sampled percussion and horns (despite many credits of real musicians) Everyman is an extremely dry record that sounds more like the reggae demo programs on ten-year-old models at the keyboard store than an original recording with live musicians. The only featured musical performances are the generally fine vocals and the rare guitar solos. It is hard to give the material much consideration when it's packaged so generically, but Everyman deserve credit for being positive and competent lyricists. When they straighten out their electronic beat and slow it down for the ballad "Lucky Star," things completely degenerate into an almost amateur mess. The dancehall strains of "To Walk With Kings" probably qualify as the record's brief high-point. The group would have done well to let their hair down a little more and allow a drummer and a full-time MC into the studio.
