As with his previous Altenburgh CD,
Strictly Business,
Evidence features drummer
Mark Ladley performing half of the program in a trio with the excellent (if underrated) tenor saxophonist
John Greiner and organist
Mel Rhyne; "Drop Me Off in Harlem" and
Thelonious Monk's "Evidence" are most memorable. In addition, there is a
Ladley-
Rhyne duet on
Irving Berlin's "Remember," two songs played by
Ladley with pianist
Laura Caviani and bassist
David Dunn, and one number ("I'll Remember April") that has
Rhyne switching to piano and jamming with a quartet also including
Ladley,
Greiner, and bassist
Charlie Hoats. No matter what the instrumental combination, the music swings and these Midwest musicians show that they can hold their own with their New York and Los Angeles counterparts.
