Two years before releasing his 2012 debut EP, Explore, Southern California surfer and college student Yoodoo Park recorded songs in his bedroom for the sheer fun of it. But Park later realized he genuinely enjoyed listening to those songs when driving long stretches of freeway, so he decided to release seven of them under the GRMLN moniker. “Relax Yourself” opens with the electric 12-string jangle and demure boyish harmonies of early Beachwood Sparks, while contrasting sunny tones with melancholy melodies à la Beach Fossils. By the second song, “Depressions,” it’s evident that GRMLN has a thing for sonic nostalgia. From the period-correct flat-wound bass strings and vintage surf-guitar tones to the beach-blanket go-go beat and dreamy androgynous vocal harmonies, this song would sound right at home on a mix between Allah-Las and Sonny & The Sunsets. Rubbing against the antiquated grain, a programmed drum machine in “Coral” serves as the song’s sole anachronism, but it also gives the tune a sense of relevant indie innovation. Conversely, “Summer Nights” sounds right out of 1966.
